‘California common’, also known as ‘steam beer’, was popular during the American gold rush. After a hard day’s work in the sun, this clear copper-colored beer with a firm bitterness was the well-deserved reward.

This is a lager like beer. It will be appreciated by people who are used to drinking Sagres, Superbock and other lagers, but who like more taste and more bitterness. 

This beer style is a “hybrid beer” style between an ale and a lager: it is made with a lager yeast which normally is used at low temperatures, but at a higher temperature to create the taste of an ale, and also to fit beer production in the Portuguese climate.

Food pairing: It goes together well with salty snacks and foods: it brings out the taste and softens the bitterness of the beer.
